Season of goodwill

Christmas is when banks prepare to close their books for the year-end, and for European banks it is a time to book restructuring costs and goodwill writedowns.

Last year, it was Barclays and Credit Suisse that put multi-billion losses under their shareholders’ Christmas trees, following Deutsche Bank which in an irresistibly German way managed to get its losses in a quarter early.
